# Conversion rate (car sales)

> The conversion rate in car sales is the share of leads that end as a sold car, measured over a fixed period. It is calculated as sales divided by leads in the same period. The rate is usually also tracked per stage: lead to contact, contact to test drive, test drive to signed order.

A single overall rate hides where the loss happens. Stage-by-stage measurement shows whether the problem is response time, test drives or closing.

Rates cannot be compared across dealers without the same definition of a lead. Counting phone calls changes the picture.

Improvement rarely comes from more leads, but from moving one stage by a few percentage points.
