# Re-leasing

> Re-leasing is when a leasing customer signs a new lease at the end of the existing one, either on the same car or a new one. It is the leasing equivalent of a repurchase, and the rate is measured as the share of expiring contracts renewed instead of ending in a return.

Re-leasing is decided 3-6 months before expiry, not in the expiry month. If the customer has not been contacted in that window, the decision is usually made elsewhere.

Rate and timing tie back to residual value: a car worth more than its residual leaves room for a better offer to the customer.

Without a system showing expiries by month, re-leasing becomes a coincidence driven by who remembers to call.
